About Saffron Lane Sports Stadium

It is over a decade since the Stadium hosted a major athletics event. Following an investment of £1.5 million by Leicester City Council the track and field facilities were finally fully upgraded to UKA standards – the certificate was granted in 2007. Early reports are that athletes like the new track surface and facilities. The field area has an unusual layout which we are all getting used to this year. The steeplechase has always (since the 1960s) been unusual because of the location of the water jump and the finish being along the back straight! The goods trains still noisily roll by at infrequent intervals making it difficult to hear instructions! However the whole stadium is a welcoming place and we hope you will come to the track and enjoy using these newly refurbished facilities. The whole event is being generously sponsored by Leicester City Council.

Car Parking

There is ample car parking space for all athletes, coaches and spectators as soon as you turn into the Stadium complex. There is a separate car park for officials (who will be given directions and a permit). There is normally sufficient parking for people with a blue badge, however on Saturday there will be several disabled athletes events and so an area of one of the car parks will be designated for blue badge holders.

Refreshments

Various commercial firms will have a licence to sell ice cream, hot food and drinks from vans during the weekend. Leicester City Council (who are sponsoring this event) will also sell refreshments from the Pavilion.

Rain Cover

There is a large covered area, with seating, along the finishing straight - this will provide adequate rain cover (if necessary). There will also be adequate space for club tents at the top of the bank behind the back straight.

Changing Facilities/Toilets for Athletes

There is a completely new pavilion building at the top end of trackside area. This has modern changing facilities and good disabled toilet and shower areas on the ground floor. There is also a lift for disabled people up to the club house and refreshment areas.

Toilets for Spectators

'Portaloos' will be available for the public for the weekend at the back of the stand. The toilets for disabled people in the Pavilion are available for disabled spectators who need them.
